Volkswagen hat heute Mittag noch weitere Erläuterungen zu den Updates abgegeben:
Dear First Movers,
We see a lot of your posts and questions regarding the updates you get in your ID.s and would like to explain the differences between them.
In our ID. models, we distinguish between the following types of Over-the-Air software updates:
- “System updates”, for example the ID.Software2.3, are applied to numerous control units and basically can be seen as the operating system of your car. Previously, a workshop-visit was necessary for those updates. The ID.3 was our first model capable to receive them without visiting the workshop.
- “System In-Car Apps”, for example the digital manual, legal app, etc., are pre-installed apps that perform important tasks but do not influence the behavior of your car in terms of driving, charging or safety. Those apps can be updated much more frequently because they don’t require such extensive testing. This makes it easier for us to adopt to your feedback and wishes within a much shorter amount of time.
- “Navigation updates” are well-known and basically do not differ from what you may be used to in our conventional (combustion engine) cars.
While we have just started the rollout of our very first system update, the ID.Software2.3, we have yet deployed a few System In-Car Apps already. You have seen them (or soon will) in your infotainment system:
- “Digital Manual” replaced the physical manual in most countries and allows us to update the manual without having to print and send out tons of paper. They are also a prerequisite for upcoming system updates (otherwise you would have to change your physical manual at the dealer).
- “ORURN” turns the visualization of release notes (for system updates) from plain text into a HTML format including pictures and formatted fonts.
-
“Background System Service” fixes a bug that has caused the notification on the availability of new System In-Car App updates to show up only once. After installing the “Background System Services” update, future notifications will come up again until you have installed the update.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have received but not yet installed the “ORURN” In-Car App, you will see the notification for it again and can now install it subsequently. - UPCOMING: “Information for system updates” is basically the same as “ORURN” but this time we chose a more descriptive text (also in the details under “This update contains:”).
Important note: The In-Car Apps do not affect the system updates. Both run independently from each other but in some cases, In-Car Apps can only be deployed to cars with the latest ID. software version. Do you have any questions regarding the different types of updates? Please let us know in the comments below.
Best Regards, Your Volkswagen ID. Team
